The 5 Peaks Challenge

Oliver Millington Adam Chambers

2 Men 5 Peaks 1200 Miles 60 Days

So, here's the bit that makes our expedition different from all the others. You may have heard of people climbing the "Three Peaks challenge" or even the "Five Peaks Challenge", in a time limit of under three days. The only way that this is achievable is if you travel between the mountains by car (or helicopter if you want to show off). We, will be being substantially more Eco-Friendly, and travelling between the mountains by Sea Kayak. This will make our all manpower 5 Peaks Challenge the first of its kind (Hello Guinness book of records).

After climbing Snowdon we are paddling (kayaking slang there) from the Menai Straits in North West of Wales separating the Welsh main land with Anglesey. After launching at our access point we will paddle North west out of the Straits, then up and around Llandudno. After a few days of arduous expeditioning we will be ship dodging around Liverpool, after that we go onwards past Blackpool (if time allows we may scale the tower as our 6th peak) and Middleton. From here its across Morcombe Bay and past Barrow-in-Furness through to Ravenglass where we launch our assault on Scafell Pike.

Once returned to the Sea we continue north past Whitehaven and on towards Workington and Maryport. We now cut across the bay and round to Stranraer. At this point, we are using a nifty time saving short cut by picking up our kayaks and running overland (tickets availlable). We will head directly north from Stranraer to the Isle of Arran, paddling up its east coast untill we rejoin the mainland and hit Carse, where we will "jump ship" and drag the boats overland through West Tarbert straight into loch Linnhe. Just at the northern most point of Loch Linnhe we camp at Lochyside and tackle "the Ben".

Heading south we go back down Loch Linnhe right the way to the open sea, no land hopping antics this time. We head past Machrihanish golf club and then cross to Northern Ireland taking on the Irish Sea in one big lump. From here we will hit Cushendall and head southeast past North Head and Whitehead. Going into Dundrum Bay we reach Newcastle and this is where Slieve Donard stands.

From Dundrum Bay we go south towards Kilkeel and then cross into the Republic of Ireland's waters. The next major city is Dublin and from then Wicklow and Arklow. We will follow the coast around to Wexford and on our travels will also pass Kilmore Quay, Slade, Tra Mohr, Dungarven, Youghal and Cork. Now for the final stretch, Cork to Baltimore to Kenmare, where we will finally ditch the paddles and get ready for the long walk to Carrauntoohil.
